We had a blast at March’s Talk Party Series. We enjoy great discussions and killer jams – hence the name. It’s always nice to get together with other creative folk to plan new projects and share helpful information.

This time we featured two POP-UP INFO BOUTIQUES with some brilliant African women you should know more about.  First up was “10 Things Every Creative Entrepreneur Should Know to Protect Their Craft” with Ony Nwaohuocha, the founder and principal attorney of OnyLaw.

Ony has extensive experience in international law, dividing her time between New York City, Lagos and Accra. This session addressed how legal protection works to preserve an artist’s intellectual property. She shared key pointers with us about copyright and trademark protection laws in Ghana and the U.S., business registration, contract negotiation, international social media marketing, and the different requirements for incorporating a business versus setting up a non-profit. Ony’s talk was important since creative entrepreneurs in Ghana experience great difficulty sustaining their craft and access to professional training.

FAMIA NKANSA

We wrapped with an innovative mix of readings, poetry and performances by five writers from The Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women blog – curator Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, Famia Nkansa, Kuukua Dzigbordi Yomekpe, Nana Akosua Hanson and Nana Nyarko Boateng.

NANA NYARKO BOATENG

The topic, Surviving Sexual Abuse, took shape through a myriad of vulnerable sexual encounters that held the audience in suspense. The feminist writers shared their bittersweet discoveries – the steady numb created by years of molestation by a father, the surprising shriek of romance twisting into rape, how mothers and daughters share the secret bond and burden of sexual assault, the intention behind a masseuse’s touch that confuses the receiver’s mind and body, a fantastic muse on an African woman’s sexual utopia, among others.

KUUKUU DZIGBORDI YOMEKPE

This critical session marks our third discussion on the varied ways we look at African gender and sexuality. Billie Richards, a psychotherapist based in Accra, joined at the end of this panel to provide greater context to how differently women and men are socialized to respond to sexual abuse. Citing confusing cultural communication between partners, an assertive “no” might be interpreted as “playing hard to get”.

NANA DARKOA SEKYIAMAH

We are encouraged by the great work Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women is accomplishing by providing a safe space and a comprehensive archive for African women worldwide to share their lives, fears and desires openly with one another. Through this work, women cooperatively recognize each other’s experiences and take charge of their own healing.
